How do we measure the impact of a library in a community? Because it is more than a dollar return. Libraries change lives, and more and more we are being asked for evidence of this essential belief from library staff. In Queensland, the State Library decided to undertake the research to provide clear evidence of this impact and further, embed creative practice in public libraries. This presentation will cover the research commissioned by the State Library of Queensland and will showcase the results and Jane will discuss the resultant toolkit and its application.

Steve will focus on ‘Libraries in a time of disruption’ – harnessing the power of the imagination to create powerful, realistic and community-accepted future scenarios. Steve will draw on his extensive library management, publishing and leadership experience, and explain why it is important to project your planning horizons into the world of what could be. This will help to use disruption to energise and shape your future library environment. Steve O’Connor has conducted workshops on library futures and scenario planning across Australia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. Steve has held senior library roles and is the Editor of the journal Library Management as well as Collection Building.

Moving from a career in libraries to owner of a national solar company, Jenny will share how she built a business from scratch using skills and experience she gained in the library industry. A real-life example of the importance of recognising your transferable skills and using them to your best advantage. After all, you might take the librarian out of the library, but you can’t take the library out of the librarian!

This session explores a major innovation in state and province level advocacy. The Federation of Ontario Public Libraries has built a province wide initiative that harnesses the power of the network – affordably – to communicate the value and impact of public libraries in their communities. It encompasses scaleable training of all public library systems (over 300) in the province to engage in narrative storytelling using social media of all types. This is based in an OpenMediaDeskTM of professional journalists who also create content and engage end-users to share stories about the role public libraries played in their lives. Combined with a province-wide dashboard they can track the virality of this content (video, graphic or text), it builds capacity to communicate with the public and inform funders.

Libraries are arguably the single most important grass-roots community space with capacity to provide ALL members of their community access to current knowledge and information. They can provide Internet-enabled computers and tablets, collaborative working spaces, themed activities and programs targeting different audiences and acquire new resources to add to their borrowing collections.

This session will discuss the City of Sydney Library’s broadening of its approach to technology based programming across its network of nine libraries. The Library has developed a strategic framework that identifies four main pillars that lay the foundation for programming: Lifelong Learning, Social Connection, Digital Citizenship and Creative Participation. Through the development of a programming framework, the focus for technology has shifted from ‘User Education‘; building basic computer skills through Microsoft Office to ‘Digital Citizenship’; ensuring the audience engages meaningfully in the community through accessing, using and learning about different technologies and digital resources. ‘Digital Citizenship’ programming expands upon the scope of technology based education to explore all learning areas of STEAM, further enriching the lives of the community through a holistic approach to skills and knowledge development for all age groups.

Public libraries have evolved into a unique partnership in SA between State and Local Government. Our communities have embraced them, turning them into the most highly trafficked buildings in Australia. With the needs of South Australian communities in mind, Councils have embraced change to encompass electronic services and enhanced community spaces. Councils with community support have also funded increased demands over the past decade. As we look ahead with the benefit of the Tomorrow’s Libraries report, new challenges and opportunities are here or on the horizon. Libraries and Councils must collaborate and innovate to ensure the future of these important facilities and services.

In this presentation, Alison will discuss her work with the ILF and the challenges of school libraries in schools in Kakadu and what the teachers, parents and community members are doing to keep them going. Alison will also discuss the books that she makes with the kids, so that they have appropriate stories to read, and especially ones that they have created themselves.
